Highest Boost on R33 GTR

Hi All,

Could someone tell me the highest boost i can run on my factory R33 GTR series 3...without distroying the turbo's, i've got 3" exhoust system from the cat back, D-Jetro PowerFC and apexi boost controller. I dont want to change the turbo's due to the fact that i'll be upgrading to R34 soon. Any advice will be much appreciated. Cheers

Hey there i would run 16 psi with what you have done But every car is different best is do it on a Dyno that way you know it will be right

Cool...i've book the car in to get it tune today on a dyno, it will be interesting to see what HP i get out of it with the set up. Thanks for the reply.

Shane you cant be serious.

 

Run 18 pound and watch the turbine wheels come flying out the exhaust.

 

I managed to break 1 of my series 3 GT-R stock turbo's just occasionally running 15 pound for power runs.

 

Basically as soon as you start running them over their designed boost you run the risk of them shitting themselves. Over 15 its just a matter of how long.

I ran 16psi in my gtst before i got the gtr for 2years and never had a problem but it comes down to how you drive it.

1 hard lap on the race track and your gtst turbo would have been cactus! Gtst's turbine wheels fall off at a lot less boost than gtr turbos. You were really lucky or baby'd the car a lot.

The car is now tuned on 16psi and it making 366RWHP. I've got 3x settings on the boost controller 12, 14, and 16psi. I cruise on 12psi and only go on 14 and 16psi once in a while just for the thrill. This car will never go on a track, just the occasional weekend driving thats all.

I have a R33 GTRVspec, Running 14psi as its tune. I'm Running a direct fit Tomei Ecu replacement(which sadly is untuneable in australia) I am making 198kws with only Tomei drop in cams, and a 3 1/2 Inch Kakimoto Exhaust. I have however been told that 14psi on the stock turbos is ALOT!!! so im upgrading to the GT2860r-5. IMO i would just upgrade adn then when you want take off the turbos for your 34, bolt on the old ones and tune it down a little.

That seems really low for a tuned GTR. Are you sure you don't have any leaks?

 

My GTR when i first bought it made 250rwkw with a kakimoto catback exhaust and a nistune..

Yeah i have been quite oftenly told that 14psi is too much for the stock turbos... however i do believe that it is cause its not tuned for the fuel. and has a HUGEEEE restriction in the exhaust system its a 3 and a half inch then goes to a 2 and half cat from when it was complied thats getting swapped out shortly.

14 psi is pretty much standing on the edge of the cliff, could take a couple of steps forward and could be the end of you or could take some steps back and be safe as houses. If you get what I mean

 

I ran 1 bar through my GTR as a daily and that handled it fine, they were actually around 20psi for 2 months and i still dont know how they held together.

Its more to do with temps of the wheel than boost as such.... obviously the more boost you run the hotter the wheel gets, but, if it has an after market ECU you can tune it a little richer and cool it all down making the wheels last a little longer

 

I have seen tuned GTR's running 16psi with no problems. We actually ran 18psi through the stock turbo's for a while and nothing happened to them

My R33 GTR was dyno'd at 222.7kw with a cat back exhaust and the boost restrictor removed. It's my daily and my turbos are running at 14psi. Nothing broken so far.

yeh i agree, that seems abit down for the mods, i have completly stock 33 gtr, standard air box, and i have the dyno sheet it pulled 208 kw's at all 4's. running 14psi.

It's been over 3 years so I would assume something has changed whether it be ecu, motor dead or car sold....
